Reading Matters 2013

The schedule for Reading Matters 2013 is now available, boasting an impressive line up of emerging and established authors from across Australia and the world.

One of the themes explored this year is story told through different mediums with speakers including poet Tim Sinclair, games developer Paul Callaghan and American graphic novelist Raina Telgemeier.

The conference will also explore adults and teens within the YA context and gatekeeping – who decides what teens can, can’t and should read?

International guests include:

Libba Bray (UK), author of the Gemma Doyle trilogy and Going Bovine

Gayle Forman (US), author of If I stay and sequel, Where she went

Keith Gray (UK), author of Creepers.

TEDx Melbourne: Education Leadership

Exciting news this morning, with registrations now open for the TEDx Melbourne event which will run on the evening of Thursday the 19th of  July. The free event will be hosted at the State Library of Victoria and will explore the theme of Education Leadership.

The event certainly has a wonderful line-up of speakers with Will Richardson, Professor Stephen Dinham and Jenny Luca due to present. You can read about Jenny’s excitement about being asked to present in her recent post. Congratulations Jenny, this is a great reward for all of your work and we can’t wait to see your talk.

Places are limited so make sure you register as soon as possible and keep an eye on the #tedxmelb hashtag and TEDx Melbourne website for any updates about the event.

British website Teen Librarian (no, our colleagues are not getting younger before our very eyes, it’s for librarians who work in young adult settings) provides some excellent resources for those of us who work in schools or public libraries.

The site has book trailers, book reviews (and I love that the book the website author is currently reading is Melbourne’s Lili Wilkinson‘s Scatterheart), event ideas, information on graphic novels, ‘films of the book’ and more.

The monthly newsletter, although includes some content specific to the United Kingdom, has some interesting author interviews and book reviews. Well worth a look!
